The Colombian senator Miguel Uribe was shot in Bogotá on Saturday, according to the Government and his party, and the local media reported that he was in a local hospital in serious condition.

The 39 -year -old senator, who runs for the presidency in 2026, is a member of the Party of the Conservative Democratic Center of the opposition founded by former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The two men are not related.

According to a party statement, condemning the attack, the senator was organizing a campaign event in a public park in the neighborhood of Fontibon in the capital on Saturday when “the armed subjects shot him on the back.”

The party described the attack as serious, but did not reveal more details about the condition of Uribe.

Colombia Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez said that a suspect had been arrested in the shooting and that the authorities were investigating whether others were involved. Sanchez said he had visited the hospital where he was being treated.

The Presidency of Colombia issued a statement saying that the government “categorically and strongly” rejected the violent attack and requested an exhaustive investigation into the events that took place.

Uribe is from a prominent family in Colombia, with links with the country’s liberal party. His father was a businessman and union leader. His mother, the journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped in 1990 by an armed group under the command of the late leader of the Pablo Escobar poster. She was killed during a rescue operation.

Colombia has been wrapped for decades in a conflict between the leftist rebels, the criminal groups descended from the right -wing paramilitary and the government. The leftist president, Gustavo Petro, sympathized with the senator’s family in an X message, saying: “I don’t know how to relieve her pain. It is the pain of a lost mother and a homeland.”
