Philip Rivers answered the call when the Indianapolis Colts needed him most and nearly led the team to an upset victory over the Seattle Seahawks, but came up short.
The Seahawks cruised to an 18-16 victory on Sunday behind kicker Jason Myers’ six field goals. Rivers scored a touchdown on his return, but was unable to put together a more explosive offense in the second half. He gave as brave a performance as a 44-year-old who hadn’t played in almost five years could give.

Back in Alabama, the high school football team he coaches watched as the Colts quarterback attempted to lead his team to victory. Rivers had been coaching football at St. Michael Catholic High School before returning to the playing field. He said he hoped he had served as an inspiration to young people.
“Maybe this will inspire or teach you not to run or be afraid of what may or may not happen,” Rivers said after the game. “Hopefully, I think about my kids and the players I’m in charge of at school, who will say, ‘Shit, the coach wasn’t afraid.’
“There are doubts, and they are real. The guaranteed safe bet is to go home or not try, and the other is: ‘Shoot, let’s see what happens.’ I hope that in that sense it can be positive for some young men or women.”

Rivers entered an exclusive club when he threw a touchdown pass to Josh Downs. He became the fifth player in NFL history to throw a touchdown pass at age 44 or older, joining Tom Brady, George Blanda, Steve DeBerg and Vinny Testaverde.
“It’s been 1,800 days since I’ve thrown a touchdown, or an interception. So we’ve got both (boxes) checked,” Rivers said.
Just last month, Rivers was named as one of 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2026 class. But his eligibility will be restored due to his appearance in the game.
