- Cofense warns about an ongoing phishing campaign
- Threat actors are to go through Binance and promising their victims $ Trump coins
- The victims are attracted to download Connectwise Rat
Cybercriminals are taking advantage of Trump’s fashion to steal people’s information and possibly other cryptocurrencies, Cofense warned.
Earlier this year, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, launched a “memecoin” (a cryptocurrency currency made of fun) called $ Trump. After its launch, the price of Token shot at more than 300% during the night.
In two days, it became the 19th most valuable cryptocurrency worldwide, with a total commercial value that approaches $ 13 billion based on a value of $ 64 per Token for the 200 million tokens issued on the afternoon of January 19.
Rat connected
These types of events are gold opportunities for cybercriminals. As reported by Cofense, the threat actors made a false Binance website that, although it is not perfect, does a good job to pretend to be the popular exchange of cryptocurrencies. Then, the attackers sent electronic pHishing emails, telling their victims that they could recently redeem the Trump coins, but only if they move quickly and download “Binance Desktop”.
Instead of obtaining the exchange client from the exchange, the victims would install the Connectwise rat, a remote desktop administrator (RDM) that once legitimate exploited by cybercriminals to act as malware. As soon as the false software is installed, the attackers moved and tried to take care of the device.
This is unusual, Cofense said, since in most cases of connected rats, the threat actor would interact with the victim after having spent some time. In any case, the rat is used to exfilt the passwords stored in Microsoft Edge and other programs and applications compatible with the Trojan.
Phishing campaigns often take advantage of current events, since they help create a sense of urgency. Quick sales tickets for events such as Olympic Games, or the World Cup, Black Friday or cryptocurrency tokens that increase rapidly in prices, can trigger Fomo with consumers, making them ideal foundations for a scam campaign.
