Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said the gunman approached the church and began to “shoot a rifle through the church windows towards the children sitting in the banks in the Mass.”

“Shooting through the windows, he hit children and worshipers who were inside the building,” O’Hara said. “The shooter was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a gun. This was a deliberate act of violence against innocent children and other people who worship. Pure cruelty and cowardice to shoot a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible.”

As members of this community, we are together in love. Minnesotans, we cry this tragic loss and extend the strength and compassion with all those affected.”

Several children injured in the shooting were being treated at the Hennepin County Medical Center. Tom Wyatt, president of the Department of Emergency Medicine of Hennepin Healthcare, confirmed that four of these patients required surgery.
