- UK hardware sales data available for Black Friday period
- PS5 consoles increased and represent 62% of the market share
- Switch 2 was also successful, although Xbox consoles were left behind
There was a lot of appetite for game console sales during last month’s Black Friday sales event. And now we have some UK consumer data to look at.
Hardware sales data from market research firm NielsenIQ (as reported by The Game Business) shows UK console sales are up 7% in units and 14% in total revenue.
Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 5 family of consoles drove the lion’s share of console sales during the Black Friday period, accounting for a staggering 62% share. This is largely due to the surprisingly large discounts Sony applied to its consoles, with an average retail price of £340.
On average, Sony cut around 21% on the PS5 Slim consoles with the disc drive included and around 34% on the PS5 Slim Digital Edition. The PS5 Pro also fell to a new low of £586, more than £100 cheaper than its £699.99 retail price.
Nintendo also had a decent showing with the Switch 2 console. It accounts for around 23% of hardware unit sales. Discounts on Nintendo’s system weren’t as aggressive as Sony’s, but shoppers still managed to save on consoles and bundles with an average retail price of £405.
The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles lagged behind the competition and accounted for around 10% of hardware sales during the Black Friday period. The lack of appetite for Microsoft consoles after such harsh price increases is probably the main culprit, but there were savings to be made; Buyers spent £385 on Xbox consoles on average, showing that the cheaper Series S was probably more popular during the sales period.
The best game consoles.
