- Peter Green Chilled told his clients that he suffered a ransomware attack
- Temporarily stopped delivering goods
- The markets are feeling the sting of the attack
Peter Green Chilled, a United Kingdom logistics company that distributes refrigerated and frozen foods to the United Kingdom supermarkets, suffered a recently ransomware attack that caused serious problems throughout the supply chain.
According to multiple media reports, the company sent its customers on May 15, to notify them the cybersecurity incident that occurred the day before. The BBC, citing the company’s managing director, Tom Binks, said the transport activities were operational, but no new orders were processed.
No more details were given about the attack itself. Therefore, we do not know who the attackers are, how they managed to infiltrate Peter Green Chilled’s infrastructure, or how much they demand in the rescue.
How the attack affects supermarkets
Nor do we know if the attackers stole any sensitive file, as usual in ransomware attacks. It seems that the company is not responding to media consultations at this time.
Peter Green Chilled is not the greatest organization in its industry, but still plays an important role, since it provides the main supermarkets in the United Kingdom, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Aldi. It also attends CO-OP and M&S, which currently address their own cyber attacks.
The attack at Peter Green Frilled sent waves throughout the industry. Speaking in a morning radio program, the founder of Black Farmer Food Brand explained how Peter Green not delivering the products will probably cost the business about $ 133,000 per week. And that is just a business, for the work of a week.
Cybercriminals love critical infrastructure suppliers, since the pressure is enormous and forces organizations to pay the rescue demand to keep the business underway. For Jamie Moles, the senior technical manager of the NDR extrahop provider, cybersecurity in retail trade and logistics should be treated with the same severity that is treated in critical infrastructure.
“Cybersecurity in retail logistics and supply chain must be treated with the same severity as the critical infrastructure,” Pro Techradar Pro in a statement sent by email told. “Protecting digital systems is no longer optional, and the modernization of how organizations can see in their networks will improve resilience against threats such as ransomware, ensuring continuity and confidence in the systems in which we all trust every day.”
