A police officer was martyred and a militant killed during a fire exchange on Monday in the southern district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, police said Monday.

According to the police, the incident occurred while the agent was on the service as part of the security agreements for the National Anti-Police Campaign.

The unidentified assailants opened fire against the security team, which caused a reprisal response in which an attacker was killed.

The authorities recovered several weapons and articles of the deceased militant, including a launcher, a machine gun, two motorcycles, a national identity card, three ATM cards and a smartphone.

The attack occurs a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the second campaign of eradication of 2025 polyomyelitis, which is scheduled for April 21 to April 27.

Polyomyelitis workers and their security escorts have often been attacked, particularly in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. In 2024, at least 20 people died and 53 wounds in similar incidents during vaccination units against Polyomyelitis in KP.

Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries where polyomyelitis remains endemic.
