Crackdown launched against wheat smugglers


21 people arrested, 291 tons of flour and 28 tons of wheat recovered

To prevent illegal transportation and smuggling of wheat and flour in Rawalpindi, the Food Department and Rawalpindi Police have established joint check posts at eight different locations. CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance and an offensive has also been launched.

Already 21 cases have been registered, 21 people have been arrested and 291 tonnes of flour and 28 tonnes of wheat have been recovered.

District Food Controller Muhammad Ramzan, contacted by Express, said there are no restrictions on transportation of flour, however, it is mandatory for those transporting flour and wheat to obtain a permit and during verification, action is being taken against those found illegally transporting flour without a permit.

According to Rawalpindi police officials, joint teams of Food Department and police have also seized vehicles used for flour smuggling. Action was taken against flour and wheat smuggling in Chakri, Taxila, Saddar Wah and airport areas.

Officials said special cameras have been installed on all routes into and out of the city, while 8 special pickets have also been set up. Officials said, “Effective monitoring of flour and wheat smuggling is being carried out. The people involved cannot escape the clutches of law; prevention of flour and wheat smuggling is ensured as per the directions of the Punjab government.”
