Cracks appear in Lyari building after last night’s earthquake

Residents claim the “construction mafia” is responsible for circulating rumors about properties in a bid to seize them.

In Lyari’s Naya Abad Liaquat colony, cracks appeared in a residential building, Baba Arcade, immediately after the earthquake, prompting residents to evacuate and gather in open spaces for safety, according to Edhi officials. An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was recorded on Tuesday at 12:58 a.m., 87 kilometers northwest of Karachi, and tremors were felt in several parts of the city.

Locals alerted the Edhi Foundation by calling 115. Upon receiving the alert, ambulances, Edhi volunteers, a heavy police presence, firefighters and Rescue 1122 teams arrived at the scene, conducted an initial inspection of the building and advised citizens to stay away due to potential risks.

Media teams also reached the spot following the reports, and news of the building cracking began to circulate across television channels and social media.

A resident of the building claimed that while the earthquakes were felt throughout the city, the building had suffered no real damage and that there were still people living there.

The resident claimed that a “construction mafia” was allegedly responsible for circulating rumors about the dilapidated state of the property in an attempt to take it over.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain alert.

In October 2025, a mild earthquake was felt in parts of Karachi on Wednesday morning, causing momentary concern among residents of Malir and its surrounding areas. No casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported.
