Customs defends imports of luxury cars, denies money laundering claims

Customs officials are rejecting the accusations of money laundering and the lack of invocation in the audit after the authority of luxury vehicles, with the main customs collector, Jamil Nasir, saying that these statements are currently unfounded.

The main collector acknowledged that the audit process after cleaning is currently weak and is hindered by personnel scarcity, emphasizing the need to strengthen it.

Clarifying further regulations on car imports, Nasir pointed out that the 2022 import policy order prohibits the importation of old cars and used commercially. The only exception is for Pakistani abroad, who are allowed to import vehicles under specific schemes, such as personal, luggage and gift schemes.

These imports are still subject to the payment of all applicable tariffs and taxes, which must be paid from the importer of the importer. He said that the objective of the reforms is to improve the facilitation of interested parties.

Nasir explained that the central evaluation unit is now operational in two shifts, which extend from 8 am to 12 am these reforms have already led to a faster load authorization in the ports, with the Fail Foul Evaluation System that is now eliminated between 1,500 and 2,000 statements of goods (GD) daily.

The central exam unit has also started working, with efforts to minimize delays. A virtual hearing system has been introduced to save time, allowing people to participate without appearing in person.

According to the main collector, these reforms are now moving towards a stability phase, and laboratory sampling reports are also being provided in one day.
