- Groups of scams sanctioned by the United States Treasury in Burma and Cambodia linked to $ 10B in fraud and traffic of people
- The objectives include KNA affiliates, owners, energy suppliers and money laundering networks
- Freeze assets, blocks financial access from the United States and trigger global commercial restrictions
The United States Treasury Department sanctioned multiple scam organizations that defrauded US citizens of $ 10 billion last year, alone.
In an announcement published on September 8, it was said that the groups carried out several large operations in Southeast Asia, mainly in Burma and Cambodia.
Not only did they deceive people through several romantic scams and false investment opportunities, but also dedicate themselves to forced labor, human trafficking and physical violence.
Two dozen objectives
The funds lost by these scams have increased 66% year -on -year, said the United States government, emphasizing the importance of the sanctions imposed.
“The cybernetic industry of Southeast Asia not only threatens the well -being and financial security of Americans, but also submits thousands of people to modern slavery,” he said under the secretary of the Treasury of Treasury of Treasure and Financial Intelligence John K. Hurley.
“In 2024, the offstressed Americans lost more than $ 10 billion due to the scams based in Southeast Asia and under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Besent, the treasure will display the entire weight of their tools to combat organized financial crime and protect Americans from the extensive damage that these scams can cause.”
Nine targets affiliated with the Karen National Army (KNA) in Burma are now sanctioned by the Treasury Foreign Assets Control Office (OFAC), together with 10 objectives located in Cambodia.
The complete list can be found in this link. In summary, they include the people who control the property that houses scam centers, several KNA officials and retention companies, energy suppliers that feed different centers of scams, founders of money laundering operations, real estate companies and more.
Being placed on the blacklist of Ofac means that people and entities have their assets under the jurisdiction of the United States and cannot access US banks, keep accounts in dollars or move money through the United States financial system.
It also means that citizens, companies and US organizations cannot do business with sanctioned individuals and entities, and in some cases, it could mean visa denials and international surveillance lists.
Many non -American banks and companies also avoid sanctioned people, even if they are not legally obliged, because dealing with them can trigger sanctions or loss of access to the US market.
