D. Wayne Lukas, legendary horse coach, dead at age 89, says the family

The legendary horse coach D. Wayne Lukas died, his family said Sunday. He was 89 years old.

Lukas had recently been hospitalized with a severe blood infection of Mrsa that caused important damage to his heart and digestive system. The disease worsened the pre -existing chronic conditions.

“Wayne dedicated his life not only to horses but to the industry, developing generations of riders and women of horses and cultivating the game inviting fans off guard to the winner’s circle,” said his family.

“Whether he boasts of a single age of 2 years as the next winner of the Kentucky derby or offered quiet words of advice before a great career, Wayne brought heart, grace and sand to every corner of sport. His last days spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family and faith.”

He won 15 triple Crown races, including four Kentucky Derby races.
