- Nine out of ten workers handle spreadsheets daily, says Canva
- Complex formulas and leaves are the largest obstacles
- Data visualization is important for narration
A new research by Canva has highlighted how much data companies are using, however, the competition and confidence of the workers are delayed, with an “increasingly common data fear.
The majority of workers (89%) now handle spreadsheets daily, but more than one in four (27%) would avoid them if they could, with Canva’s investigation accusing training efforts to be ineffective.
Almost half (44%) of the United Kingdom organizations already provide training in data literacy, however, four out of five (78%) professionals still claim to experience anxiety of data that relates to incompetence, not just a disgust.
Canva says that most workers feel “data fear”
The three quarters (77%) of the 2,400 marketing and sales professionals surveyed declared that their dependence on the data has increased in the last two years, with a similar number (74%) that wishes to be more effective with the data in their daily work.
Although there seems to be some confidence with the data analysis, some key areas stood out as a lack, including formulas (46%) and understanding of too complex spreadsheets (42%).
The head of Canva de Emea Duncan Clark said: “Working with data should not be limited to specialists. When it gives the equipment the appropriate tools and training to convert the numbers into narratives, it can unlock a lot of potential in an organization.”
Although the data can be powerful, Canva highlighted the importance of framing it correctly with an effective narrative. Four out of five (82%) said they feel safer when they have visualized data, with even more workers (89%) that visualizations believe that visualizations increase the credibility of their presentations.
“The objective is not to make everyone a data scientist, but to train the teams to make sense of the data at their disposal and make them convincing and attractive stories,” Clark added.
Looking towards the future, it is clear that training efforts have failed workers to date. Canva advocates the provision of more intuitive tools that make data management more elegant and easier to use.
