SARGODHA: The death toll from the road accident caused by dense fog in Sargodha rose to 14 as more victims succumbed to their injuries, rescue officials said on Saturday.
The accident occurred when thick fog reduced visibility on the road in the Kot Momin town area, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The truck sank in the Ghala Pur Bangla canal, which was dry at the time of the incident, Rescue 1122 officials said.
Rescuers said the truck was carrying 23 people. Seven of them were crushed under the vehicle and died instantly.
Rescuers quickly arrived at the scene and began rescue operations. The bodies of the victims and the injured were removed and taken to nearby hospitals.
So far the identity of the deceased and the injured has not been released.
The entire province of Punjab is currently under thick fog reducing visibility on roads.
Authorities said poor visibility due to fog made driving in the area extremely dangerous during winter mornings and evenings. They urged motorists to slow down and take extra care during foggy conditions to avoid these types of accidents.
A similar incident caused by poor visibility amid thick fog occurred in Dera Ismail Khan earlier this week, when two people were killed and 14 others injured in a collision between a sugar-laden trailer and a passenger van.
The accident took place on Tuesday near Basti Dawana within Taunsa Sharif limits on the Indus Highway.
The trailer loaded with sugar was reportedly traveling from Rahim Yar Khan to Kohat, while the passenger van was heading from Rammak to Multan.
On the side of the road there was a truck loaded with sugar cane and the dense fog severely reduced visibility.
When the trailer tried to overtake the truck, it collided with the van coming in the opposite direction due to fog, causing the tragic accident.
