Islamabad:
The opposition leaders in the National Assembly and the Senate transferred to the Superior Court of Islamabad (IHC) against the delay in the appointment of the new electoral chief commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP).
Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz asked the court to instruct the federal government to initiate the significant consultation process with the opposition for the appointments of the new CEC and two ECP members.
The current CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja and the ECP member, Sindh, and the ECP Baluchistan member completed its terms in the position recently. The request at the IHC declared that the court should prevent them from continuing in the office.
Ayub, the opposition leader of the National Assembly, and Faraz, the opposition leader of the Senate, said that the Constitution was being violated by delaying these appointments, such as the Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly and the president of the Senate failed to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.
The petition asked the court to instruct the speaker to form a parliamentary committee, order the president to send the names of the members of the senators to the speaker and order the prime minister to make consultations with the opposition leader under article 213 of the Constitution.
