Liverpool FC Diogo Jota and his brother died early in Spain after the Lamborghini in which they were traveling crashed near the western city of Zamora, leaving the car on fire, police said.
The death of the 28 -year -old striker occurs less than two months after he lifted the Premier League trophy against a strident local crowd in Anfield in celebration of the winning season of the Liverpool title. At the end of June, Jota married Cardoso Rute, with whom he had three children, the youngest born last year.
“The Liverpool soccer club is devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota,” the team said in a statement on Thursday. “Liverpool FC will not comment at this time and request the privacy of the family, friends, teammates and personnel from Andre de Diogo and Andre, the club staff is respected while trying to accept an unimaginable loss.”

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were found dead after his car left a road in an accident that happened early this morning.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation and the police added that there were no other vehicles involved. Firefighters were called when Lamborghini’s fire extended towards nearby vegetation, authorities said.
Jota also played for the national team of Portugal and helped him win the League of Nations last month. His brother André Silva, 25, played with the Penafiel Portuguese club in the lowest divisions.

Jota was transferred to Liverpool from the English Club Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, winning three main trophies with them and appearing in his final match of the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2022.
Throughout his mandate in Liverpool, Jota scored 47 goals in 123 appearances.

The Portuguese Football Federation issued a statement lamenting the deaths. The president of the Federation, Pedro Proença, said that Portuguese football was “completely devastated.”
“More than a fantastic player, with almost 50 appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference in his community,” Proença said in the statement.
Portugal Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented on “unexpected and tragic” deaths. He said Jota was “an athlete who greatly honored Portugal’s name.”

“I extend my deepest condolences to your family,” he said. “It’s a sad day for football and for national and international sports.”
