- There have been more than 100 reports by AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3d chips dying from launch
- Most of the failures have occurred in Asrock’s motherboards
- The cause of the problem has not yet been diagnosed
Despite being one of the best processors in the market for PC players, Ryzen 7 9800x3D of AMD has spent a bad time since its launch in November last year. Chips exhaustion reports have been constantly increasing, with more than 100 cases now reported.
Thanks to the heroic work of the Reddit Natty_overlord user, a detailed compilation of the CPU fault reports is available for everyone to examine, and currently shows a total of 108 Dead 9800x3DS reports. Most reports show that the chip dies after only a few weeks or even days of use, without apparent problems before the disappearance.
Fortunately, most affected users have been able to have their CPU for a reimbursement or replacement without problems, and considering the thousands of Ryzen 9000 chips that have been sold, it is not a serious problem. Even so, that many failed chips are a bit worrying, especially when we still have an essentially zero idea what these premature deaths are causing.
Mysterious Origins
Well, there may be some Clues to be obtained from the Natty_overlord report, so we are not totally in the dark here. Of the 108 currently informed cases of Ryzen 9800x3D fault, a whopping 86 of them involved the A Asrock plates plant plates. 13 reports were users with ASUS boards, five from MSI and one from Gigabyte.
So is Asrock responsible? It is possible that the Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer is part of the fault here; Natty_overlord also documented another 10 Ryzen 9000 chips failures (including 9900x and 9600x), all of which occurred in Asrock Mobos. Even so, multiple failures in the motherboard of Asus and MSI would seem to indicate that Asrock is not guilty only.
There is also no chipset to suffer these problems. Most 9800x3D failures were divided between the X870 and B850 plant plates, with a smaller (but non -insignificant) number in the X670 and B650 models. In short, there is no way of knowing what these failures are causing, although AMD is certainly investigating.
What you should do
Unfortunately, there is not much that you can do to protect yourself from this mysterious insect that kills with chips, apart from not having an Asrock motherboard, perhaps, given the heavy weighting of the failure reports for Asrock hardware. If you have been considering buying a Ryzen 7 9800x3D, it is possible to stop waiting for the moment.
The good news is that if their PC is affected, most reports seem to have been resolved satisfactorily through a RMA process, either directly to AMD or the retailer in cases involving pre-constructed PC.
Naturally, I will continue to monitor this story and continue with any new detail that arises. I have communicated with AMD to comment, but I suspect that I will not get any fleshy information there; 108 is not a small amount of dead chips, but it is not such a large amount that the red team In fact You should worry that something is very bad.
