- AI training is a necessity in today’s business landscape, but who is responsible?
- Both employees and employers think that the other party should take the initiative.
- Even business leaders disagree on who is responsible
Although it is widely accepted that AI training in the workplace is essential to helping employees make the most of technology and welcome it into their workflows without feeling threatened, new research from Emergn has revealed a clear disconnect over who should take responsibility for this upskilling.
For example, four in five (81%) employees believe employers should upskill staff, but a similar number (83%) of CEOs believe employees should train themselves.
Currently, two out of three workers say that an employer who does not offer them enough training programs would be enough to discourage them from applying for a job at that company.
Are employees or employers responsible for AI training?
“The data is clear: employees crave guidance and education to keep up with the constant pace of change and meet the expectations of their leadership,” said Emergn CEO Alex Adamopoulos.
However, where this responsibility lies is a hotly debated topic. Although 83% of CEOs believe that workers should take the initiative, only 64% of COOs and 59% of CTOs share this belief.
“Finding a middle ground is emerging as one of the most important challenges of AI adoption in the coming year,” Adamopoulos added. “AI training and skill development is not a nice-to-have; it’s a necessity for organizations that want to remain competitive in the war for high-performing talent.”
However, the need to establish procedures is evident. Without sufficient training, businesses can experience delays in digital transformation, high employee turnover, and negative impacts on productivity, mental well-being, and career progression.
Since most of those impacts primarily affect businesses rather than staff, Emergn’s data seems to indirectly indicate that the responsibility likely falls on employers.
Regardless, it is clear that AI skills are no longer just a welcome bonus, but rather a foundation for both companies and employees to stand out from the competition.
