Dodgers’ Dustin May talks about undergoing emergency surgery in esophagus

The Los Angeles Dodgers launcher, Dustin May, returned from an injury, hoping to join the team to help them win a world series, in July 2024.

While May was still rehabilitating the facilities of the Dodgers camelback ranch, he ordered a dinner salad.

May took a bite and felt lettuce stuck in his throat. He tried to wash it with a little water, but he knew something was wrong.

For 15 minutes it was “mega painful,” May said through Times, speaking about the incident publicly for the first time last week. The pain was in his throat and stomach.

It turns out that May had suffered without knowing it a serious tear in its esophagus. He later learned that the lettuce housed in his throat pierced his esophagus, something that is very uncommon.

Once the pain disappeared, May thought it would be fine.

“I’m not a great panic,” he said. “He relaxed a little. So I thought, ‘I’m fine. I don’t need to do anything.'”

Millie, May’s wife, was not the same thought as Dustin.

“No,” May recalled. “We go to the emergency room to review it.”

After a computerized tomography revealed the importance of breakage in the May esophagus, doctors immediately led him to surgery.

“It was extremely frustrating. You can’t plan it. You can’t try to prevent it. It just happened,” May.

“I was not on my bingo card for 2024”.

Surgery, which can be described as “basically full abdominal surgery,” left the jug with a long scar from the bottom of the chest to the stomach.

May went from being a part of the Dodgers launcher staff in the final stretch, to realize how fragile life is.

“It simply gives me a different point of view about many things in life. Just seeing how something so related to baseball can be, it can disappear in a second. And the things that my wife went through, definitely gave me (a feeling) From ‘Wow, things can change like this’.

“It was definitely an event that alters life. It was definitely very serious. It is not very common surgery. It was definitely an emergency.”

May Tommy John de May was the second time he had undergone his elbow repair, since he underwent surgery in 2021.

May has launched 191.2 entries in five seasons in the big leagues. It has been effective when it is healthy, since it has an effectiveness of 3.10 with 174 strikeouts when it is in the dodgers mound.

The rotation of the Dodgers is full of Aces, which is not a guarantee that May is in the initial rotation despite being healthy again.

Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw are among those found in the initial rotation.

Anyway, May is enthusiastic to finally be healthy and capable of competing again.
