- Inc ransom recently added Dollar Tree to its data leakage site
- Dollar Tree responded by saying that the data belonged to 99 cents alone
- Only 99 cents is a discount retailer who declared bankruptcy in 2024
Computer pirates claim to have raped Dollar Tree and stole their confidential files, but the discount retail giant says he never suffered an attack, and the data that stirred around the dark network does not belong to him.
A ransomware operation known as inc ransom recently added Dollar Tree to its data leakage page, claiming that it stole 1.2 terabytes of confidential and personal data, threatening to release it unless a rescue is paid. The group provided a sample of the stolen data, including passport scans, and also cited a press release in the dollar in which it announced the acquisition of leases of only 99 cents.
And there is the Rub – Dollar Tree says that the data actually belongs only to 99 cents, a completely different discount shopping chain.
The data of only 99 cents were not acquired
99 cents were only declared in bankruptcy in April 2024, citing the economic stress of inflation, pandemic effects, theft/contraction and hard competition. He closed the 371 stores in mid -2014 after the settlement, and Dollar Tree acquired rights to 170 previous leases, along with his North American IP and some equipment in the store.
Dollar Tree reused many of these leases and opened it as his own stores later that year.
A discount retailer spokesman said they were aware of data theft claims, but emphasized that it was only 99 cents that were beaten.
“The archives referred to in these statements seem to involve former employees of former 99 cents,” said the spokesman. “The participation of Dollar Tree with 99 cents only stores is related to the purchase of selected real estate lease rights after its closure.”
“We do not acquire its corporate entity, systems/networks or data. Any accusation of the participation of Dollar Tree is inaccurate.”
Since 99 cents only go out, their emails and telephone numbers are missing, which makes it impossible to request a statement or a comment. Dollar Tree, on the other hand, is one of the most successful companies in its industry, with more than $ 17.6 billion in sales last year.
