Microsoft is struggling to convince some people to update Windows 11, but a new feature that is currently being tested could make people change their minds.
The function is known as ‘drag tray’, and as the Tom Hardware points out, it will appear when the user selects and drags a file in the file explorer, offering quick options to send the email file or his smartphone.
The drag tray was detected by the user of X Phantomofearth in an early version of an upcoming Windows 11 update, known as Insider Preview Build 22635.4805.

As you can see from the video, drag a file from the file explorer and drop it into an icon of an application inside the drag tray will open the application and automatically attach the file. He looks quite slippery, and being able to drag and release a file of his PC with Windows 11 to his smartphone could be incredibly useful.
However, judging by the video, it seems that this function will work better with Microsoft’s own applications: use the phone link application to send files to your phone, and outlook or mail to send the file through an attached file email.
This should not be too surprising, since it is obviously easier for Microsoft to integrate new features such as this with its own applications, but if you use a different email customer, such as Thunderbird, then it is possible that you do not get the best experience. However, not everything is lost, since in the video, we can see a ‘more options’ button, which will allow you to choose other applications.
It is also worth taking into account that this is only a short video without much context, so we do not know if you can choose and reorganize the applications shown in the drag tray, or if third -party applications appear if you have them installed And they are simply not in the video, since the user only uses Microsoft applications.
When will we get it?
Another important consideration is that this seems that it is a very early vision of the function of the drag tray, and that means that the finished product could be seen and behaved very differently from what we see here, and that also means that they could be Compatible with more applications.
Certainly it seems that it could be a very useful addition to Windows 11, and if it works well, I could convince people who still use Windows 10 to update the new operating system. This is a key objective for Microsoft, since there is still a significant number of Windows 10 users who do not want to change, but after October 14, 2025, the company will stop admitting Windows 10 with free updates, and that could leave Windows 10 holdouts in a difficult situation.
Adding new great features such as Windows 11 is a much better way to convince people to move to the operating system than some of Microsoft’s heaviest attempts in the past.
However, we currently do not know when we can expect the drag tray to arrive. As Tom Hardware points out, Microsoft did not even mention the drag tray in its update version notes, and is currently only using a third -party application called Vivetool.
This suggests that the characteristic is very Early development, so don’t wait for it soon. Presumably, Microsoft will continue to work on the function and release it in Windows Insids to perform tests in the coming months, where people who have inscribed to be experts can prove it and inform whether there is any error or problem.
Assuming that everything goes as planned, then Microsoft could implement the drag tray to all Windows 11 users in the future. The time that will take that is an assumption of anyone, and there is also the risk that the company does not continue working on it, and in silence eliminates the function completely.
It would be a shame, since adding new features such as Windows 11 is easier to use is the best way Microsoft can convince people to update from Windows 10, and will also benefit those of us who are already using Windows 11.
