In an advance for organ transplantation in Pakistan, the Dow University Hospital has successfully conducted its 190 liver transplantation under the guidance of international medical experts. The procedure was supervised by the renowned international surgeons, including Professor John Lamattina, who previously visited Pakistan; and Professor John Fung, who visited the country for the first time. Both are affiliated with the Pritzker Medicine School of the University of Chicago. The teachers provided valuable ideas to the Dow liver transplantation team, headed by Dr. Jehanzaib Haider, about avant -garde surgical techniques and global trends in the liver transplantation.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Dow, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, ​​congratulated the team for the successful transplant and expressed their appreciation for international visitors. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, who was present during the live session, shared details about the patient’s background. The recipient, a 42 -year resident of Shahdokot, had suffered hepatic failure due to long -term hepatitis B and D infections. His 23 -year -old nephew volunteered to donate 750 grams of his liver, facilitating the successful transplant.
Professor Hassan said that with the support of the Government of Sindh, the University of Dow has now completed 190 liver transplants, all provided without cost for patients. He also stressed that the approach of the Pakistani society for the donation of organs is often formed by religious and cultural beliefs. In response, the Dow University is developing a proposal for an organ donation bank to help improve accessibility and consciousness.
In addition, he announced that Dow’s University of Health Sciences is organizing the first International Conference on Pakistan’s transplantation at the end of this week.
