ECP unpacked PTI legislators convicted by ATC during the May 9 riots

The Electoral Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday disqualified Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary, the member of the National Assembly (MNA) Mohammad Ahmed Chattha and the member of the Punjab (MPA) Ahmad Khan Bhachar assembly, after his conviction by the Anti -Terrorist Courts (ATC).

The ECP disqualified the three legislators of the Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) under article 63 (1) h of the Constitution, according to two notifications issued here. After disqualification, the ECP declared three vacancies, which would be filled through partial elections.

The ATC in Sargodha had condemned and condemned Chattha, MNA of NA-66 Wazirabad and Bhachaha –MPA from PP-87 Mianwali-Lll and the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, 10 years in prison for violence on May 9, 2023.

Similarly, the ATC-LLL, Lahore, had sentenced Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary and granted him a 10-year prison sentence in a case derived from the violence of May 9, the attacks on the military installation by the supporters of the PTI after the arrest of the founder of the Imran Khan party in a case of corruption.

As a result, several PTI leaders and workers were arrested and tried in different courts. In December, a military court condemned 25 people, including Imran Khan’s nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and then sentenced to 60 more.

Last week, the two ATCs found dozens of leaders and workers of PTI, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Umar Sarfraz Chema, Ejaz Chaudhary and Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachaha, guilty of auging and absorbing the disturbances on May 9, 2023 and sentenced them to several terms of the prison.

However, the vice president of PTI, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, was among the few, who were acquitted of the charges in one of the cases recorded in Lahore. The verdicts occurred before completing the deadline of August established by the Supreme Court to conclude the cases of May 9.

Sargodha ATC sentenced 32 people, including 10 years in prison to Bhachar and Chattha. Mianwali Police had registered the case against PTI’s legislators, workers and supporters to create anarchy, resorting to a fire and inciting people to vandalism.

Lahore ATC sentenced eight PTI leaders to 10 years in prison for creating anarchy and resorting to fires caused on the Sherpao de Lahore bridge. The ATC judge, however, acquitted six PTI leaders and workers, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, in the same case.
