Ed Sheeran has spent years performing to millions of people around the world, but now he hopes the future of his live shows will be a little different and a lot closer to home.
Even after earning more than £1.16bn in ticket sales on his last two massive world tours, he says constant traveling is not something he wants to continue as his family grows.
The singer shared that his priority has shifted to being present for his wife Cherry and daughters, Lyra and Jupiter, who will soon be in school.
You recently made a list of what really matters to you.
“The other day I wrote a list of things that matter to me and one is my family, another writes songs, another does shows,” he explained.
He added that keeping those three at the center of your life means that “you can eliminate the noise around that, no matter what that noise presents itself.”
That thought led him to an important idea: creating a place near his home in Suffolk where he could make a long-term residence.
It would allow him to continue performing live without spending months away.
“I looked into the idea of building a place in my hometown and doing a residency there,” he said.
“That eliminates travel and being away from my family. I’ve built a studio nearby that I can use. I feel like that’s the model you can adopt.”
It’s easy to understand why he’s willing to slow down the pace of world touring.
Their recent Mathematics Tour included 188 shows across five continents, entertaining 8.8 million fans between April 2022 and September of this year.
That race alone grossed £655.8 million, after his Divide Tour from 2017 to 2019 grossed £581.3 million.
Still, Sheeran has yet to say goodbye to the road.
Fans around the world can expect at least one more big tour linked to their latest album, Play.
in it Awards talk On the podcast, he admitted: “I have one more big tour left before I sit down for the school years. That’s the model I think I want to adopt. I feel like my life is getting pretty messy. I commit to a lot of things and end up doing quite a few.”
For now, Sheeran is clearly focused on finding a balance, enough music for fans and enough time at home for the biggest moments.
