ESPN anchor Stephen A. Smith delivered his verdict on the Wednesday shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minnesota.

During an appearance on his podcast, Smith called the shooting “completely justified” from a legal perspective, but also believes the officer could have shot at the tires of the woman’s vehicle.

“I watched the video numerous times and seeing what happened from a legal perspective as it pertains to a law enforcement official, I don’t expect him to be prosecuted. It was completely justified,” Smith said.

“From a humanitarian perspective, though, why did you have to do that? If you were able to get out of the way, that means you could have shot the tires. That means you could have moved a few meters away after shooting the tires. And if you weren’t successful in doing so, you could have carried her down the road.

“You didn’t have to do that. She wasn’t driving down the road coming at you at 90 miles per hour. She was parked in the middle of the street, and instead of getting out of the car, she unfairly attempted to drive away and unfairly ignored a law enforcement officer, which is exactly what ICE is, and as a result, she lost her life because of it.”

Good was operating a vehicle at the time of his death. Officers ordered her to get out of the vehicle, but she refused and “attempted to run over and ram them with her vehicle,” according to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

“It was an act of domestic terrorism“Noem said. “One officer of ours acted quickly and defensively, firing to protect himself and the people around him.”

Members of the Minneapolis City Hall confirmed Good’s identity in a joint statement Wednesday, calling her a “member of our community” and demanding that ICE leave the city.

The Department of Homeland Security reported in December that assaults and violent attacks against ICE law enforcement officers have increased more than 1,150% compared to attacks under the Biden administration. It found that there were 238 assaults on ICE agents between January 21, 2025 and November 21, 2025, compared to just 19 during the same period in 2024.
