Robert Redford was remembered for his pioneering efforts in building the famous Sundance Institute at its final gala.
As part of the ongoing Sundance Film Festival, the ceremony is notable for being the first since the death of its famous founder in September of last year.
To begin, Ethan Hawke narrated: “Once upon a time there was an extraordinary man who connected us all in this room.”
“We wouldn’t be here without the love and appreciation for Robert Redford,” he said.
He blue moon The star recalled meeting the late actor-turned-director for the first time, an opportunity that presented itself when he auditioned for 1992. A river runs through it.
Although Hawke failed to land the film, directed by Redford, the filmmaker told him: “You’re too young for this role. But I just want you to know that you’re going to have a wonderful career and I can’t wait to see it.”
“He believed in me. He followed up. He came to see me in a play. It was a theater with capacity for 99 people; admission cost $10. What the fuck?“the actor recalled. “He defended other people. The fact that he had time to care about all of us is very meaningful.”
Chloe Zhao, currently touring the directing awards circuit Hamnetalso stepped forward to honor Redford’s memory.
Accepting the institute’s Pioneer Award, the Chinese director highlighted “interdependence” and “community” as the most important aspects of “leadership” and being a pioneer.
“I want to thank Robert Redford for knowing the importance of the interdependence of nature and human nature,” he added.
Other stars who came together to honor the Sundance founder included his indecent proposal co-star Woody Harrelson, as well as directors Ava DuVernay and Taika Waititi.
Notably, this year is the last time Sundance will be held in its former home, Park City.
Robert Redford’s daughter, Amy Redford, described the final evening as “a homecoming.” She further said that she couldn’t “help but think about all the galas my father had no interest in attending and how he could have enjoyed this one.”
