Sony has finally confirmed who will direct Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse – and one of the film’s producers already had to debunk a wild fan theory about its production after the announcement.
Yesterday (December 17), Deadline was the first to report that Justin K. Thompson and Bob Persichetti were leading development on the long-awaited animated film. Less than an hour later, the official Spider-Verse X/Twitter account confirmed that this was also the case.

The hiring of Thompson and Persichetti makes a lot of sense for the final installment of the trilogy of animated films directed by Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. Thompson was one of three people who ran 2023. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – an impressive film that I gave four and a half stars out of five in my Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review. Thompson also worked as a production designer on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versethe groundbreaking first entry in the film series that garnered critical acclaim and won multiple awards after its release in December 2018.
Meanwhile, Persichetti has also been an integral cog in the Spider-Verse machine. He was one of three filmmakers who directed In the Spider-Verseand executive produced last year’s sequel. Clearly, Sony Pictures’ upcoming animated Spider-Man movie is in very capable hands with this duo at the helm.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Persichetti and Thompson said: “We’ve had the immense privilege of being a part of Miles’ journey from the beginning, and directing the conclusion of his story is beyond exciting. The creativity and care put into every minute “This project has been truly inspiring. “We’ve created what we believe is a very satisfying ending and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”
Why did Spider-Man fans react with outrage to this Beyond the Spider-Verse reveal?
Let me be very clear: the hiring of Persichetti and Thompson is not the reason why Spider-Man fans reacted angrily immediately after this announcement. In fact, given the duo’s work on two of the best Spider-Man movies of all time, the reaction to their installation as Beyond the Spider-VerseThe management team has been positive.
Instead, frustrated observers attacked Sony and the Spider-Verse film series’ main creative team over what this revelation meant. Beyond the Spider-VerseThe real development. The third and final chapter in the franchise was originally supposed to debut in theaters sometime in 2023. However, when Through the Spider-VerseThe release of was delayed from October 2022 to June 2023. Beyond the Spider-Verse was delayed until March 2024.
In the following months Through the Spider-VerseHowever, during the theatrical release, reports emerged that its sequel would not reach its March 2024 release date due to various production issues, allegations of poor working conditions for its artists and animators, and the 2023 Hollywood strikes. In light of the reported problems, Beyond the Spider-Verse has been stripped of an official release date. In fact, the latest information, courtesy of Deadline, suggests that it will be until 2026 before the film finally hits theaters.
All of this brings us to the fan anger surrounding yesterday’s announcement. Following the confirmation of Persichetti and Thompson as its directors, numerous Reddit threads were lit up by fans mocking Sony for how long it was taking to make Beyond the Spider-Verseasking the same question about whether its March 2024 release date was possible.
Personally, I didn’t believe the outrage. Yes, this film has clearly been beset by several problems since it was first announced, and it’s likely that some original ideas and/or work have been scrapped in recent years. However, I refuse to believe that we’ve been misled as to how much (or, in some people’s minds, how little) has actually been developed so far, and I also don’t believe that the hiring of Persichetti and Thompson means that the work will only has been developed. fair began.
On time. – and doing a great job. They were just announced today.”
So there you have it. We may not have had an exciting experience. Beyond the Spider-Verse announcement we expected in November, nor did we get a much-needed update on its eventual release. However, the work has continued for the past few years, so everyone take a breath. While we wait for the final film to arrive, you can remember what happened in the final minutes of its predecessor by reading my Through the Spider-Verse end of article explained.
