- Facebook and Instagram will soon offer an option without ads to UK users
- It will cost £ 2.99 per month, or £ 3.99 if it will be signed on Android or iOS
- This will be the only way to completely avoid the directed ads.
A great change is arriving on Facebook and Instagram in the United Kingdom, since in the coming weeks, users will have the option of paying a monthly subscription to avoid ads.
The subscription has a price of £ 2.99 (approximately $ 4 / au $ 6) per month on the web, or £ 3.99 (around $ 5.50 / au $ 8) if it is subscribed through iOS or Android (because these platforms take a cut of the rate), and if you choose to pay, you will get a free experience on both platforms.
It is worth noting that if you have multiple accounts, the subscription will be applied to each account that has added to the Meta Accounts Center, but you will automatically be charged a small price of £ 2 (approximately $ 2.70 / au $ 4) per month on the web or £ 3 (about $ 4 / au $ 6) through iOS or android for each additional account.
Putting a price on privacy
As subscriptions advance, this is not too expensive, but since it is the only way to interact with these platforms without receiving specific ads, it does not feel ideal.
Essentially, it means that you have to pay for a goal to respect your privacy, since although there are some advertisements in their services to customize what data advertisers have access, they cannot completely eliminate the specific nature of the ads.
That is why this change is happening, since the Office of the Information Commissioner (ICO), which is the United Kingdom data regulator, has concluded that the users of the United Kingdom should be able to choose not to have specific ads.
Speaking to The Guardian, an ICO spokesman said that “this moves away from users with advertisements as part of the standard terms and conditions to use their Facebook and Instagram services, which we have been clear is not in line with the United Kingdom Law.”
Personally, this subscription does not attract me, partly because these services do not use much anyway, but also because I do not like the idea of having to pay to maintain my privacy. Even so, it is possibly better than not having the option, as has been the case so far.
An option that is not available is a free medium point of non -personalized ads. That is why Meta has not launched a similar offer in the EU, since regulators said that the simple “binary choice” violates the Digital Markets Law (DMA).
Although it is worth noting that even with the subscription, goal, of course, will still collect your data to customize your services, you will simply use it to serve advertisements. So, if you do not trust your data, then there is a simpler and more cheaper solution: do not use your applications at all.
