The Christian community in Pakistan celebrates Christmas on Wednesday with traditional fervor and devotion, joining millions of people around the world to celebrate the holiday with prayers, decorations and festivities.
Churches across the country held special prayer services, illuminated with colorful lights and decorated with Christmas trees. Christian residential colonies were similarly decorated with twinkling lights, stars, and festive decorations.
In Karachi, a central ceremony was held at St. Patrick’s Church, where a large number of believers gathered to pray. Lahore’s St. Luke’s Church celebrated with a £100 cake, which attracted a lot of attention.
Prayer meetings were also held in Bahawalpur, Quetta, Multan, Sargodha and Lodhran, with worshipers praying for peace, unity and prosperity of the nation.
The Punjab government implemented comprehensive security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations. More than 30,000 police officers and personnel will be deployed to ensure the security of more than 2,900 churches across the province, including Lahore.
More than 5,000 police officers and personnel will have security duties in more than 600 Christian places of worship in the provincial capital.
The sale of specialty cakes at bakeries large and small has gained momentum ahead of Christmas across the city, as Christian families prepare to celebrate their annual religious ritual.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) conveyed its greetings to the Christian community, expressing good wishes for their celebrations. The military celebrated the universal values of love, compassion and peace that are central to the occasion.
The President and the Prime Minister congratulate on Christmas
President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have extended their heartfelt greetings to the Christian community in Pakistan and around the world on the joyful occasion of Christmas and its message of peace, brotherhood and love for all humanity.
In his message, the president said the spirit of Christmas offered a universal lesson to humanity, encouraging people of all religions to embrace love, generosity, mercy, unity and hope.
Zardari said Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith, and protects their freedom to worship and live according to their beliefs.
‘Punjab Religious Harmony Center’
Delivering a message of happiness and love to the Christian community across the world on the eve of Christmas, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the province has become the center of interfaith harmony in the country.
The Prime Minister said she also shared the community’s joy at the Christmas festivities. “Christmas conveys a message of peace, love and service,” he said.
