- I’ve counted three TWMs released or in demo over the last year.
- Viewsonic’s VG1656N costs less than $300 and has a 4000mAh battery for an expected runtime of 3 hours
- Mirror or stream wirelessly, no need for a separate app
Truly wireless portable monitors have been constantly evolving, and we could count no less than three released or on demo over the past year.
Enter the latest version of ViewSonic, the VG1656N (via TechPowerUp). This 16-inch portable monitor features a sizable built-in battery and wireless streaming capabilities at a reasonable price of $299.99 USD.
The lightweight display weighs just under two pounds and is less than half an inch thick, making it easy to carry in a backpack. It also includes a smart case that doubles as a protective case and an adjustable kickstand.
Highly portable display
It offers a native WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution and also supports a 4000 mAh battery that can power the monitor for up to three hours depending on usage.
Users can mirror content from Windows, Mac, iOS or Android devices without the need for additional apps or software using a wireless USB-C dongle.
The ViewSonic VG1656N integrates a G-sensor that detects the orientation of the monitor and automatically adjusts the screen to landscape or portrait mode.
This feature requires the vDisplayManager app for wired connections and does not work at all with wireless streaming.
The monitor also comes with two USB-C ports, offering 60W bi-directional power delivery, although the battery itself cannot be recharged via USB-C and users will need an AC adapter.
On the other hand, the company plans to launch the TD1656-2K in the second quarter of 2025, with a 16-inch touch screen with native 2K resolution.
“Our new desktop monitors, along with our existing range of portable displays, show how ViewSonic continues to expand its display solutions to offer more options, features and functionality for any type of work or play lifestyle,” said Jeff Muto, Business Line. Director at ViewSonic.
