PESHAWAR: Five people were killed and six others injured in a shootout near Tehkal, Peshawar, stemming from an old rivalry, police said on Thursday.

Speaking to PakGazette News, SP Warsak Mukhtar Khan said gunfire erupted when members of a group, returning from a wedding ceremony, met their rivals in the Tehkal area. The exchange of gunfire intensified and caused casualties.

According to SP Khan, five people lost their lives and six others were injured during the altercation.

Police have launched legal proceedings and are carrying out further investigations into the incident.

Those killed and those injured in the shooting all belonged to the same group, CCPO Qasim Shah said.

Among the wounded is Bilal Khalil, head of a local social organization, who was mainly targeted by the attackers, he revealed.

The CCPO further said that the groups involved had an ongoing dispute over a shopping plaza, which had been a source of tension between them.

In September 2024, a previous exchange of fire between the same factions resulted in one fatality, he added.
