At least five firefighters were injured on Sunday while fighting a fire that crossed multiple factories in the Karachi Landhi export processing zone, emergency officials said.
According to rescue 1122, the fire exploded in the early hours of the morning in one of the factories and extended rapidly to three adjacent units due to the presence of flammable materials such as chemical and textile products.
Rescue officials confirmed that injured firefighters, all staff of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), were transferred to the hospital to receive treatment. One of them remains in a critical condition after a section of the burning structure collapsed during the fire extinction effort.
The director of Operations of the Rescue Department told the media that the dense shortage of smoke and water was hindering the efforts. He added that the affected buildings have been declared structurally insecure after the fire.
The authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but cited the storage of chemicals and fabrics as factors that contribute to rapid extension. The authorities continue to evaluate the damage and investigate the origins of the fire.
