Hyderabad:
The flood triggered by the rain that cuts a strip through Punjab can soon extend its devastation to Sindh, which potentially affects hundreds of thousands living in the river areas of the province. The senior minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, warned on Saturday that 1.65 million people residing in 15 Sindh districts could be affected by rising waters.
In statements to the media in Karachi, Sharjeel explained that 1,651 villages, distributed in 167 union committees and union and home councils of approximately 273,000 families, face the threat of flooding. He also warned that around 102 points along thousands of kilometers of the Indo River embankments showed structural weaknesses during the main previous floods in 2010 and 2015.
To keep residents informed, the rainfall and flood emergency monitoring cell of the provincial government has been activated. Accessible through four fixed numbers, the cell will provide flood updates every three hours. Sharjeel urged the media to trust this official source of precise and timely information about the evolutionary situation.
When addressing concerns about the relocation of people living in the river bed, Sharjeel said that most residents prefer to keep relatives instead of moving to relief camps. “The inhabitants of the Katcha areas are very aware of when to evacuate to imminent floods,” he explained. However, the provincial government is proactively establishing help fields based on an estimated number of people displaced in each district. In addition, 300 camps for cattle are being established to protect animals during the crisis.
Sharjeel also emphasized that the president of the Peoples Party of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Sindh’s prime minister, Murad Ali Shah, are closely monitoring the situation and issuing directives actively to guarantee a coordinated response.
Flood update
Irrigation authorities registered 364,573 water flow cusecs at Guddu Barge, 256,660 CUSECs in Sukkur and 265,328 Cusecs in Kotri on Saturday. Currently, the state of flooding in the three bombings is still low. GUDDU BARGE can support up to 1.2 million CUSECS, Sukkur up to 960,000 CUSECS and KOTRI up to 870,000 CUSECS.
During the devastating floods of 2010, Kotri Barge successfully passed between one million to 1.2 million flood water cusecs without structural damage or spills of their dikes. Meanwhile, the Indo River has begun to claim its land, locally known as Katcha. The residents of hundreds of villages in the divisions of Larkana, Sukkur and Hyderabad began to evacuate their houses for security on Saturday.
The floods also arrived at Torhi’s embankment, a site whose violation in 2010 caused floods that affected almost half of the province of Sindh after a 15 -year -old gap. Separately, Larkana residents have expressed concerns about the weak points that are developed in the Bund Moria Loop Bund, criticizing irrigation authorities for not reinforcing the dike so far.
