After a break of almost six weeks, the Champions League returns with the seventh round and what looks like a very important match for both Marseille and Liverpool. The French team enters the tie in 16th place in the table with nine points from six games, three away from a place in the top eight, while the Reds are also out of the automatic round of 16, although only on goal difference.
Even though Marseille are lower in the table, they will believe they have a great chance of a crucial victory when they host Liverpool at the Stade Vélodrome. Roberto de Zerbi’s side have won their last two Champions League games, a 2-1 victory over Newcastle and a 3-2 victory at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and thrashed Angers 5-2 in Ligue 1 at the weekend.
Such was the dominant nature of the weekend’s victory that De Zerbi was able to change his entire attack on the hour, giving Mason Greenwood, Amine Gouiri and Hamed Traoré a much-needed rest. The trio scored against Angers and will look to expose a Liverpool defense prone to individual errors.
The Reds go into this match unbeaten in 12 matches, but there is a growing sense of frustration at the club. Arne Slot’s side have struggled to break down teams playing in a low block and wasted a lot at the weekend, scoring just once in 32 attempts against 19th-placed Burnley.
Despite the negativity, there are some positives. The huge Ekitike continues to stand out, while Florian Wirtz increasingly influences the games and produces magical moments. With Mo Salah also returning from AFCON, Slot hopes his attack can fire away and achieve a crucial European victory.
