He’s been the rap-fighting “Doctor of Thuganomy,” a chest-thumping, dogtag-wearing military upstart and, proving that even the best can still mess up badly, the world’s least compelling heel, and this Saturday, 23 years after his SmackDown debut in 2002, John Cena and his jorts will gallop to the ring for the last time.
Gunther earned the right to face the man who brought us the “Attitude Adjustment” and the “Five Moves of Doom” in his swan song by winning the Last Time Is Now Tournament, defeating Je’Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes, Solo Sikoa and LA Knight. The former two-time world heavyweight champion, incidentally, sent Goldberg into retirement in July.
As is often the case, the fairytale ending was not for Goldberg, although at 48, Cena is 10 years his junior, a recent Intercontinental Champion, 17-time World Champion and Triple Crown winner. He’s also one of the most iconic WWE Superstars of all time, arguably the promotion’s greatest asset, and has repeatedly emphasized that there will be no return – this is truly the last dance.
