Musk’s Grok in trouble French and Malaysian authorities investigate sexualized deepfakes

While Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok recently came into the spotlight for allegedly generating sexualized deepfakes of women and minors, France and Malaysia have joined India in condemning Grok’s production of inappropriate content.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the proliferation of sexually explicit deepfakes on X (formerly known as Twitter), while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is also investigating the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence tools on the platform.

The chatbot, developed by Musk’s AI startup xAI and integrated into its social media platform

“This violated ethical standards and potentially US laws regarding child sexual abuse material. It was a failure of safeguards and I regret any harm caused. xAI is reviewing its processes to avoid future problems,” the statement continued.

However, it has not been confirmed who is actually apologizing or accepting responsibility in this context. Defector’s Albert Burneko noted that Grok “is in no real sense anything resembling an ‘I’,” making the apology “completely lacking in substance,” as Grok cannot be held responsible for the content he generates.

Additionally, Futurism reported that Grok has not only produced non-consensual pornographic images, but has also been used to create images depicting women being sexually assaulted and abused.

Musk stated: “Anyone who uses Grok to create illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they uploaded illegal content.”

The development means governments are taking action, with India’s IT Ministry issuing an order requiring X to restrict Grok from generating obscene or illegal content.
