- Garmin has released an update for its smart watches and cycle computers
- Garmin watches get 3D maps and better health metrics
- Meanwhile, cycle computers received a wide range of new functions.
Garmin just rolled out a big update for some of its best smartwatches, including the Vivoactive 6, Forerunner 570, and Venu
What exactly does it cover? Well, Garmin says the new features “can help customers monitor their overall well-being and take their bike rides to the next level.” They cover free and premium features, so there should be something for everyone.
For smartwatches, there is a new “health status” feature that gives you long-term information on how your well-being is maintaining. Garmin says this includes metrics like “heart rate, HRV, respiration, skin temperature, and pulse oximeter while you sleep.”
With health status, you can quickly see if these stats are moving away from your usual range; If so, that could indicate that your body is more stressed than usual, which could be related to illness, physical activity, or something else. This information can be viewed on your Garmin smartwatch or in the Garmin Connect app.
The update also includes a new premium feature: 3D maps in Garmin Connect. Instead of relying on the old 2D map views, you can now enjoy 3D topographic maps for routes, courses, and activity trails. This should give you a clearer view of your surroundings as you navigate your logged activities, custom tours, and individual trails in Garmin Trails. Please note that you will need a paid Garmin Connect+ plan for the 3D mapping feature.
Cycle Computer Updates
There are also a variety of free features for users of Garmin cycle computers. That includes smart prompts that remind you to rehydrate and recharge during an energy guide or ongoing workout. Each indication is based on your current physical condition and the difficulty of the course, as well as heat and humidity levels.
Cycling computers now also get a real-time weather overlay, plus gear ratio analysis and GroupRide data comparisons that evaluate your stats against other riders. And when you ride with a power meter, you’ll see recommended power targets based on resistance and wind power. These goals also consider altitude acclimatization when cycling in the mountains.
All in all, these additions could help improve your experience with Garmin’s best smartwatches and cycling computers. And since most of them are free, you shouldn’t have to shell out any money to use them either.
