- Google Gemini can now remember previous conversations
- The functionality of memory is now being implemented to Google One AI Premium subscribers
- Chatgpt has had a similar functionality for a year, and is one of the best characteristics of any AI chatbot
Google has just added an updated memory function to Gemini that allows you to ask AI Chatbot questions based on past conversations.
The new “recovery” function is being implemented to all users who subscribe to Google One AI Premium, a paid monthly subscription that gives access to Gemini’s best functions. With the retirement, you can ask Gemini about previous conversations and collect from where he left him, allowing AI to feel more alive and aware of his history. Previously, Gemini did not remember the previous chats, so he would have to remind him of important details.
This huge update to Google Gemini takes AI Chatbot a day with the chaatgpt of the competition, which has had a memory function that works well for more than a year. The difference is that the chatgpt offer is available for free and does not require a monthly subscription to access its functionality. That said, Google could be testing the retirement function before launching it to free Gemini users, although we have not currently had information about that.
This new update is presented at the back of the November update of Gemini that added the chatbot’s ability to remember certain things about you based on your personal interests and preferences. Unlike this new update, I would have to go to the “Saved Information” tab of Gemini and the information prior to the filling so that the AI refers to the conversations.
When Chatgpt introduced the memory last year, it completely changed the way I interacted with AI, which allowed me to speak naturally with the chatbot and the spot nuances where he could refer to the past in very useful ways. Until now, I was discouraged to use Gemini due to their lack of memory, but all that has changed. Gemini’s retirement function is being implemented in English to Gemini One AI Premium Users now (although I still don’t have access), and Google says the update will be available for other languages in the coming weeks.
The context we needed
Gemini’s ability to remember previous conversations gives Google’s chatbot AI a completely new level of utility. In the past, I have been frustrated by the lack of Gemini context to my indications when I asked similar questions in old chats. This was never a problem if he used a single chat with Gemini, but taking into account the range of models from Gemini 2.0 flash to Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, I can quickly accumulate multiple discussions at the same time.
Now, Gemini can take information from all my chats and have the personal context to refer to them in any way. Things like “Do you remember that time I told you about the train trip? What was the route you told me to take?” It can now be used in Gemini, and that is a great step to make AI more conversational and more accessible.
Speaking of accessibility, hopefully, Google plans to implement this memory function for free users, since I really believe that a memory function is one of the most important features for any AI chatbot. Until then, I will still recommend Chatgpt to my friends and family, after all, the OpenAi model has the memory of an elephant and without paying it.
