Pebble Beach, California –
With the waves of the Pacific Ocean colliding on the coast just a short wedge, former President George W. Bush offered his best wishes to Walker Cup competitors this weekend.
“I love the Walker Cup. I think it’s one of the great athletic events, never,” Bush said during Friday’s opening ceremony.
The Cypress Point Golf Golf Club, at least in the afternoon, is the host this year. It is right on the coast of the Monterey Peninsula of the most famous Pebble Beach Golf links. But this course is revered by golf fans for their holes throughout the ocean and the use of adjacent sandy dunes and the pines of damn cypresses in other parts of the property.

First played in 1922, this is the 50th time that the best amateur golfers in the United States will compete against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland in a competition called by the great -grandfather of the former president.
“You know, GH Walker had many children, who then had many children,” Bush said about his family’s connection with this event. “And many of them are here and they probably wonder why I am the guy who can speak in the Walker Cup and they don’t. My answer is: run for president.”
About their history, some of the best in the game have competed in the Walker Cup before going to Greater Glory, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory Mcilroy and Scottie Scheffler. Time will only say if any of this year’s competitors, most of whom are in college, will join that illustrious group.
In his homeland and on a four -game winning streak, the American team, at least on paper, seems to have the advantage. The six best amateur players in the world, including number one Jackson Koivun of the Auburn University, are in the United States team.

“It’s one of the best golf courses I’ve played,” Koivun said Thursday. “I was lucky to play my first year of university here, and just to return, play in the Walker Cup here, the golf course is in good shape. You think a lot about this place. It is really one of the special points of the golf.”
Of the ten American players, four come from Texas.
The best classified player (#10) of GB & I is Tyler Weaver in England, who plays his university golf in Florida State University.
“I don’t think the classifications mean an event like this,” said Weaver. “Obviously, they also have some really high players, but our team is also excellent, and the classifications at the end of the day really don’t mean too much.”

But the player who makes the greatest noise during practice rounds this week is Luke Poulter, who made four eagles, including his first AS.
“[Thursday] It was great to hide in the hole and then two holes later obtaining my first hole in one, so that was quite special, “said Poulter, son of the seven -time participant of the Ryder Cup, Ian Poulter.” The game is good. [The] The course is in incredible conditions, so there is no complaints about it. I feel very good, comfortable and ready to start this game. “
The two -day competition ends Sunday.
