German footballer Luca Meixner dies at 22


Luca Meixner, a footballer who played in Germany for SSV Reutlingen 05, has died, the club announced on Saturday. He was 22 years old.

The club issued a statement on its Instagram account. The club said Meixner died “unexpectedly.”

“Last weekend we received the terrible news that our player Luca Meixner passed away on Friday, December 27. He died unexpectedly at the age of 22,” SSV Reutlingen said.

“The entire SSV family is deeply disturbed and stunned. His teammates, all boards of directors and staff mourn Lucas’ survivors and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

The cause of Meixner’s death was not immediately released.

Meixner joined the main team SSV Reutlingen 05 in 2021 after spending four years at youth level. He played 100 games for the club and scored six goals.

He played the club’s last game on December 7 before the winter break. He played 87 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Balingen.

The club has played in the Oberliga Baden-Wurttemberg for the last nine seasons. According to The Sun, the league is part of Germany’s fifth division. They currently sit 10th in this season’s standings.
