- Ads Could Head to ChatGPT in the Near Future

We know that generating tons of AI text, images, and videos every day isn’t cheap, and it looks like the inevitable is about to happen: according to a new rumor, OpenAI is testing ads on ChatGPT, ahead of its full release to users.
As spotted by @btibor91 (via BleepingComputer), the latest ChatGPT app for Android includes hidden code that refers to an “ads feature,” some “bazaar content,” a “search ad,” and a “search ad carousel,” so it’s clear what’s coming.
What’s not certain is when or how OpenAI might decide to introduce ads into chats, or whether paying a subscription will be enough to hide them. Based on the current ChatGPT app interface style, including the new one Purchase research tool, we would expect it to be subtle and well integrated into the current ChatGPT aesthetic.
In fact, OpenAI has gone on record saying that ads should be “thoughtful and in good taste” if they need to be used, which they almost certainly are, given the cost of keeping all those GPUs and data centers running.
Ads with your AI

It’s really no surprise that advertising is coming to ChatGPT. The move had long been predicted and would align the chatbot with other AI offerings; It’s something that Google and Microsoft have already been testing, for example.
If we have to put up with advertising, it should at least be well-targeted and relevant: the AI apps that many of us chat with daily have access to a wealth of information about our likes, dislikes, and interests, and all of that can be leveraged to generate advertising links relevant to a user’s current cues and queries.
AI searches are an obvious starting point, because if you’re looking for something to buy online, you might be interested in a sponsored link or two. However, OpenAI will have to ensure that advertising content remains distinct from the usual responses of AI robots.
ChatGPT just turned three years old yesterday, November 30, but its user base has quickly grown to hundreds of millions of people, and there are plenty of eyes that could be served ads too. There have also been rumors of subscription price increases, although they have not arrived yet.
