- The Louisiana Data Center of $ 10 billion of goal may require 2,300mw energy
- That power will come from three gasoline power plants
- Questions about the net-zero target commitment have been raised
Meta plans to build an AI data center of four million square feet have come and fired for the possible implications of greenhouse gas emissions related to its energy source.
The $ 10 billion site of the company in the Richland parish, Louisiana, may require up to 2,300mw energy from three new gas power plants.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse sent a letter, published online, to the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, demanding transparency on the use and energy emissions.
Whitehouse criticized the strategy of the giant of social networks as contradictory with their own climatic promises, which revolve around fulfilling net emissions of zero for the end of the decade. The senator specifically questioned the lack of details on the contributions of target carbon capture and renewable energy compensation.
“I worry about the reports that Meta plans to boost a data center in the northeast of Louisiana with a generation of new and non -cane natural gas,” Whitehouse wrote. “Neither Enterge nor Meta have revealed details about the carbon capture project or the amount of the goal financial contribution, which raises doubts about whether target is significantly compensating for its emissions.”
The senator demanded five separate information from the company, indicating a deadline of May 28, 2025: detailed energy consumption and emission estimates for the data center; Justification to choose gas on other energy sources, such as renewable, nuclear or geothermal energies; financial details and the impact of target carbon capture investments; an explanation not to install carbon capture in the new plants; and data that show how these actions are aligned with the objective of zero net 2030.
A spokesman said The edge: “We believe that a diverse set of energy solutions to feed our AI ambitions is necessary, and we continue to explore innovative technological solutions.” Techradar Pro He has asked for an answer to the company.
