Golf legend Nick Faldo says Tiger Woods must face ‘responsibility’ after driving under the influence

Nick Faldo, a former PGA Tour star who won the Masters and the Open Championship three times each, criticized Tiger Woods and the organization after the legendary golfer’s arrest for driving under the influence.

Woods faced charges in Florida for the crash and for refusing to submit a urine sample to authorities. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage earlier in the week, showing deputies removing two pills from Woods’ pants pocket and performing a field sobriety test on him.

But Faldo didn’t mince words when speaking to the media Friday about Woods.

“There’s a side that says, ‘let’s take care of Tiger’… there has to be a responsibility side too,” he said, via Golf.com. “This is a serious thing he’s done, you know? The PGA Tour statement was so predictably weak, how they showed that the Tour will take care of him, like they always have, and then you have Jack (Nicklaus) saying he’s tarnished the entire sport. You have your opponents, but there has to be some accountability.”

Faldo was dismayed that Woods had suffered tremendous pain as he battled back and Achilles tendon injuries. He maintained, however, that his wounds were “self-inflicted.”

“I feel sorry for Tiger because he lives in pain 24/7. I asked him this years ago, even before the Los Angeles accident (in 2021), but it’s all been self-inflicted,” Faldo continued. “The bottom line is that I really think something should be done a little more seriously than sending him off to a tropical island and saying ‘Welcome back’ in three or four months.”

The PGA Tour offered its support to Woods after the golfer pleaded not guilty to his charges and promised to “seek treatment” for the problems he faces.

“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his accomplishments on the field,” the organization said. “But above all, Tiger is a person and our focus is on his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”

Faldo said the Tour must be distraught “behind closed doors” about paying Woods millions and him being in the negative spotlight.

Woods was able to seek the treatment he needed outside the US.

Faldo lamented that Woods has “avoided accountability” for some of the issues in which he has been involved.
