- UK-bound DeepMind research center will focus on scientific breakthroughs
- British scientists will have priority access to Google DeepMind tools
- Google also pledges to modernize outdated government IT
Under a new agreement with the UK government, Google DeepMind will open its first AI-powered automated research laboratory in the UK next year, with a key focus on AI and robotics.
Google’s lab will be key to creating new superconducting materials and next-generation semiconductor materials, helping the UK, Google and the world make progress in areas such as medical imaging, chip efficiency, clean energy, transportation and more.
For the UK, it means British scientists will get priority access to DeepMind tools, which will be a win-win for both parties.
Google’s next artificial intelligence laboratory is destined for the United Kingdom
The Government explained in a press release that the laboratory would be built from scratch to support Gemini at all times. But it is not Google’s first major investment in the United Kingdom.
Just a few weeks ago, Google announced a £5 billion plan to help modernize the UK government’s aging IT.
The Government believes that this partnership with Google will help in multiple sectors. For example, civil servants will be able to use automation tools to take care of repetitive administrative tasks, freeing them up to do more meaningful work. AI will also play a role in education, both in terms of training for children and supporting teachers’ workloads.
“This partnership will ensure we harness advances in AI for the public good, so that everyone feels the benefits,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall acknowledged the powerful transatlantic technology collaboration agreement: “Science and technology are at the heart of our mission to drive a new era of national renewal, and partnerships like this will help us go further, faster.”
In addition to improving public services, the UK government also sees this as an opportunity to rise to the top and become a world leader in AI science.
For now, Kendall will continue her trip to the US to explore how AI is having a positive impact on teachers and students.
