- Android XR has been exhibited by Google in I/O 2025
- It depends largely on AI to deliver many of its characteristics, such as live translation.
- Several brands of different glasses will deliver Android XR characteristics
In Google I/O 2025 Google finally gave us what we have all been waiting for (well, what I have been waiting for): an appropriate Android XR showcase.
The new Google operating system made for Android headphones and Android glasses has made fun of the next great rival of Meta’s Horizon OS, the software that feeds the goal Quest 3 and Quest 3s, and finally we have a better image of how it accumulates.
It is true that the showcase was a bit short, but we do know several new details about Android XR, and here there are four to know.
1. Android XR has Gemini in its nucleus
While he would argue that the Android XR showcase of Google was not as deep as he would like, he showed us what the operating system has executed in its nucleus: Google Gemini.
Google’s advanced AI is the defining characteristic of the operating system (at least this is how Google is raising it).
Glasses-Gemini you can recommend a place to eat ramen and then offer on-screen instructions where to find it, you can perform the live translation and in a headset you can use the immersive vision of Google Maps to transport it practically to any destination you request.
Particularly in the glasses this completely hands -free approach, combined with cameras and a front screen, seems to be Google Gemini in its most useful form. You can get the assistant help as fast as you can ask for it, it is not required to go to get your phone.
I want to see more, but this certainly seems a solid update in the similar goal function offered by Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.
2. Android XR is for more than Samsung
Before Google I/O, we knew that Samsung was going to be a key partner of Android XR, along with Qualcomm, which provides all Snapdragon chips necessary to feed the Android XR hardware.
But now we know that several other companies are collaborating with Google.
Xreal has exhibited Project Aura, which will take Android XR to an improved version of his cups with which we are familiar (such as the Xreal One), with a complete aura with a camera and a Snapdragon processor.
Then, Google also made fun of the Gentle Monster and Warby Parker glasses, which implies that it is adopting the finish line of associating with fashion brands, instead of only traditional technological brands.
In addition, since Gentle Monster and Warby Parker offer a very different design aesthetic, this will be good news for people who want varied fashion options for their new smart glasses accessories.
3. Project Moohan continues to arrive ‘at the end of this year’
The Android XR Moohan headphones project is still configured to launch in 2025, but Google and Samsung have not yet confirmed a specific launch date.
I expected us to get something more concrete, but the continuous confirmation that Moohan will land in 2025 is better than delaying.
Google and its partners were not interested in giving us firm dates, in fact. Xreal by calling his Aura project, the second official Android XR glasses, suggests that he will land at some point after Moohan, but before anything else, however, we will have to wait and see what develops.
Google certainly treated the biggest player of XR, goal, with his greatly popular search headset hardware, some blows and gave his rival something to worry about.
However, this showcase is far from being a finisher, especially not in the headphones department.
Meta’s Connect 2025 Showcase is expected to show us technology and characteristics of similar glasses, and depending on the launch dates of the finish line could overcome Android XR for the coup.
That said, competition will only be good for consumers, since these rivals fight for the price and characteristics to attract us to one side or another. Unlike the previous battles in the XR space, this certainly seems like a balanced fight and I am excited to see what happens next.
