Government plans subsidized sugar posts for Ramazan

Islamabad:

The federal government has decided to establish positions throughout the country to sell sugar to RS130 per kilogram.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board, chaired by the Federal Minister of Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain.

The meeting, which was attended by PSMA, provincial secretaries and CaƱa commissioners, approved the establishment of municipal levels that began three days before Ramazan until the 27 of Ramazan.

The sugar will be available in packages of one and two kilograms, with a purchase limit of 5 kg per person when presenting a national identity card.

Federal ministers and secretaries will supervise the positions to ensure that consumers receive sugar at an affordable price.

The meeting occurred when the speculative trade of sugar has begun to raise the prices of the sweetener even before the arrival of Ramazan and during the season of crushing sugar cane.

Sugar prices have registered an increase of RS12 per kg during the last week in the city markets, since a 50 kg bag of the product in the local market has reached RS7,400 after an increase of RS600.

According to the report, the price of sugar per kilogram in the wholesale market has increased from RS136 to RS148, while retailers are sold at RS150 per kg.

Usually, sweetest rates decrease during the crushing season. But this season, the situation is opposite and the rates are going up, although the crushing season is in full swing.

In December 2024, the ex -mill sugar rate was RS125 per kg, but now it has increased to RS140 to 143, says a spokesman for the Sugar dealership Association. He says that the Ex-Molina rate for February is launching at RS145.

He says that the export of sugar and artificial shortage of the product is responsible for the price increase. He fears that if the situation is not controlled, there is a risk that the price of sugar rises more in the month of Ramazan.
