Pakistan will launch a new Nationwide Anti-Polio campaign on September 1 in three provinces, while in Punjab, the campaign will begin on September 10.

The Federal Minister of National Health, Regulations and Coordination Services, Syed Mustafa Kamal, accompanied by the leader of MQM-Pakistan, Anis Qaimkhani, held a press conference on Friday at his camp office in Karachi regarding the next situation of polio and floods of polyomyelitis in Pakistan.

Going to the presster, he said that the polyomyelitis virus has been detected in wastewater samples of 127 districts throughout the country, including all Karachi districts.

He said that of the 26 cases reported this year, 16 were Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 13 emerging cases from southern KP, where security challenges had hindered vaccination efforts.

Meanwhile, the National Center for Emergency Operations (NEOC) has postponed the Campaign of Vaccination against Polyomyelitis in nine Punjab districts due to the ongoing flood situation.

The campaign has been postponed in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Gujranwala, Sialkot, fine, Muzaphargarh and Bahawalpur. Meanwhile, the Drive polio will continue as scheduled in Rawalpindi, Mianwali, Faisalabad and Dera Ghazi Khan.

In Atock, Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan, the vaccination campaign will continue as planned.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Kamal said: “The only solution to protect children from polyomyelitis is the repeated administration of polio falls. He said that federal and provincial governments are in constant coordination, while a command and control room has been established at the National Health Institute (NIH) to monitor the situation. He added that NDMA teams are in close contact with the Ministry of Health.

Kamal emphasized that natural disasters cannot be addressed only by provincial or federal governments, and requested the strengthening of the local government system, which he called the most effective mechanism for disaster management.

“Our country is working under provincial and federal structures, but disasters of such magnitude cannot be handled without empowered local organizations. We need administrative reforms and the creation of new units for administrative reasons, not to divide the country but to strengthen governance and guarantee delivery at the base level.”

The minister added that, although the provinces received 8,700 billion collectively rupees, there is no mechanism to ensure that resources are reduced to the lowest level. Requested transparent planning and effective fund use.
