Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Faisal Karim Kundi has administered the oath to 25 members of the Provincial Assembly in seats reserved for women and minorities, after an intervention by the Superior Court of Peshawar (PHC). The oath ceremony was held in the governor of the governor’s house in Peshawar on Sunday.

Early in the day, a scheduled assembly session to manage the oath was interrupted when the quorum was challenged shortly after the procedures began. As a result, the speaker Salem Swati postponed the session until July 24 at 2 pm.

Subsequently, the opposition parties approached the Superior Court of Peshawar (PHC) to guarantee the swear of newly elected legislators. In response, the Court ordered the provincial governor to administer the oath instead of the speaker of the Assembly.

Newly jurislators include seven women and two minority members of Jamiat Ulema-E-Islam (Jui), seven women and a minority member of the Pakistan-Nawaz Muslim League (PML-N), four women and a minority member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), two women of the National Awami Party (ANP) and a woman member of Pakistan TehreekeaFesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafesafeasaFesafesafesafea (PTI-P).

The intervention of the Court is expected to relieve continuous tensions about the delay in taking oath, an issue that had caused concern for the constitutional process and representation in the provincial legislature.

The governor of KP, Faisal Karim Kundi, strongly condemned the obstruction of the oath taking by the elected legislators, qualifying it as a violation of constitutional rights and a “shameful act.”

In a statement issued after administering the oath to 25 members chosen in reserved seats, Governor Kundi criticized the provincial government, led by Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), so he described as repeated attempts to undermine the democratic process.

“Preventing elected representatives from lending oath is shameful. It is their constitutional right, and any obstruction in this process is deeply unfortunate,” Kundi said.

He thanked the PHC for authorizing him to carry out the swear ceremony and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguard democratic values.

“We will not allow violating the holiness of democracy. The PTI has exposed to interfere with a constitutional obligation,” he added.

Following the PHC directives, the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) has announced that Senate’s elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now begin at 11:00 am instead of 09:00 am

In a statement issued in X (previously Twitter), the ECP said: “The Electoral Commission, therefore, directs that the surveys will begin at 11:00 am (instead of 09:00 am) for the realization of the Senate’s elections against seven general seats, two seats of women and two seats for technocrats, including Ulema, of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, scheduled in 21 July, 2025. ” “.” “
