Green Day rocked Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, ahead of Super Bowl LX as the NFL pays tribute to Super Bowl MVPs of the past.

The punk rock band played “Holiday” and “American Idiot,” two of their most political songs, for fans trickling in before kickoff. However, the band refrained from criticizing President Donald Trump and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during their performance.

NFL and Green Day fans who tuned in to the performance expected the group to further criticize Trump and his administration before millions of viewers around the world.

One X user wrote that it was a “shitty move” to avoid any politics.

“Green Day skipping the entire half of ‘American Idiot’ with the ‘anti-magician’ lyrics when they had the chance to sing it in front of millions during the current political state of our country is a bad move, sorry,” the X user wrote.

Another X user shared similar sentiments.

“Green Day could have ruined that s— more than just making two political songs and taking the sauce out of them,” they wrote in X.

One user wrote that Green Day didn’t do anything “significant.”

“That Green Day turned out to be a performative loser was a huge disappointment,” the person wrote. “They talk a lot of things, but when given the opportunity to play at the biggest event in America, they say NOTHING meaningful. What a complete joke of a band.”

Some BlueSky users were equally upset with the band.

“‘American Idiot’ is still a hit, but Green Day skipped the ‘sieg heil to the president’ part of ‘Holiday’; Roger Goodell must have told Billie Joe that there’s a sniper aiming at him from the rafters,” one person wrote on the platform.

Added former NFL punter Chris Kluwe: “Green Day failed, even though I was hoping they would play the second verse of ‘American Idiot.'”

Green Day’s performance before the Super Bowl didn’t seem to be enough.

The band played a pregame party Friday night at San Francisco’s Pier 29, where frontman Billie Joe Armstrong made a strong statement against ICE agents.

“To all ICE agents, wherever you are, quit your shitty job. Quit that shitty job of yours,” Armstrong said during the show.

“Because when this is over, and it will be over at some point, Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, Donald Trump, they’re going to break you like a damn habit. Come to this side of the line.”

Armstrong also said the performance is “going to Minneapolis” amid the protests and the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. He also changed the lyrics of “Holiday” from “the representative of California has the floor” to “the representative of Epstein Island has the floor.”

Armstrong has criticized the president in the past. He has compared Trump to Hitler, and the band frequently changes the line “I’m not part of a southern agenda” from their 2004 hit “American Idiot” to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” in more recent live performances.
