Hamid Raza ‘surrenders’ to police in May 9 case


His brother had earlier stated that he had been “arrested” by the police while on his way to Faisalabad.

FAISALABAD:

Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and former member of the National Assembly, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, has been arrested by the police and transferred to Faisalabad Central Jail to serve a 10-year prison sentence.

Earlier, his brother Sahibzada Hassan Raza said that Hamid Raza had been detained by the police while traveling from Peshawar to Faisalabad. However, a post on Hamid Raza’s X account claimed that he had been traveling to Faisalabad to surrender to the authorities.

PTI Chairman Advocate Gohar Ali Khan confirmed to the media outside Parliament that “Hamid Raza surrendered… it was entirely his own decision.”

PTI’s Omar Ayub Khan also posted about the situation, claiming that Hamid Raza was “kidnapped” last night in Islamabad.

“Sahibzada Hamid Raza sahib, my dear friend and colleague, was kidnapped last night in Islamabad while on his way to surrender for sentencing by an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad.”

In July, an ATC in Faisalabad had charged Raza along with several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz and Zartaj Gul, in connection with a case registered after May 9.

Hamid Raza was wanted for multiple cases of vandalism and violent protests and has already been sentenced by an atc to a sentence of 10 years in prison. The case was registered at the Civil Lines police station.

Sahibzada Hamid Raza had been elected Member of National Assembly (MNA) from Faisalabad constituency NA-104 in the general elections. Following his disqualification due to the conviction, the Electoral Commission has published a schedule for by-elections in his constituency. According to the calendar, the elections will be held on November 23.

Two days before Hamid Raza’s arrest, former PTI MP Junaid Afzal Sahi from Faisalabad PP-98 constituency, who had been sentenced to three years in the May 9 case, also surrendered to the authorities and was later sent to prison.

On May 9, 2023, PTI lawmakers and supporters attacked military installations across Pakistan following Imran’s arrest by paramilitary Rangers.

The government later launched a harsh crackdown on the former ruling party while registering FIRs against thousands of people, including PTI founder Imran Khan.

More than 100 PTI workers and supporters were also handed over to military authorities to be tried in military courts.
